Alternate Picking Practice

Alternate picking is the most fundamental pick technique every guitarist needs — continuously alternating up and down strokes. This guide covers correct wrist motion, gradual metronome practice, and the most common mistakes.

01 — Basics

What Is Alternate Picking?

Alternate picking means playing consecutive notes with continuously alternating pick strokes (down-up-down-up). Its opposite is "economy picking," which strokes in the same direction consecutively, or picking only downstrokes. Alternate picking is the most efficient and widely used foundational technique because it avoids the pick needlessly returning for every note.

02 — Technique

Correct Wrist Motion

Speed and accuracy come from the efficiency of the wrist motion, not the arm or shoulder. The wrist should stay loose; the pick should move across the string with a small, controlled arc. A tense wrist causes both fatigue and mis-hits at high speed.

🎯 Control exercise

On a single string, without fretting any notes (open string), do only down-up strokes. Make sure your wrist stays loose and the motion stays small — this forms the foundation of the technique.

03 — Method

Gradual Practice with a Metronome

  1. Start with a simple single-string exercise (e.g. a four-note repeat) at 60-70 BPM on the metronome.
  2. Make sure every note is clean and even in volume — cleanliness comes before speed.
  3. Use Auto BPM Increase to raise the tempo in +2-3 BPM steps.
  4. When cleanliness starts to break down, return to the previous tempo and stay there a few more days.

For the general scientific principles behind speed development, see our Speed Building Techniques guide — they apply directly to alternate picking.

04 — Difficulty

Difficulty at String Changes

Alternate picking's hardest moment happens when crossing from one string to another — since the pick's angle and distance change simultaneously, the wrist must adjust to a new target along with the stroke direction. Isolating these transitions and practicing them alone, very slowly, produces faster results than practicing the whole passage.

05 — Watch Out

Common Mistakes

  • Gripping the wrist tightly: A tense wrist limits speed and can lead to pain over time.
  • Assuming alternate picking is only for fast passages: The technique should be applied consistently even in slow passages; being "loose" slow and tensing up when fast is a bad habit.
  • Losing track of stroke direction: Especially in syncopated rhythms, not planning which stroke is down/up ahead of time causes inconsistent tone.
06 — Advanced Practice

The Six-String Staircase Drill and Pick Angle

After isolating string crossings one at a time, test your wrist control with a drill that spans the whole instrument: a "staircase" pattern that plays one note per string, climbing across all six strings and then descending. Start with the open sixth string, fret the fifth fret and move to the next string up, climb this way to the first string, then descend the same path. Every note must be played strictly with alternate picking (down-up-down-up); the stroke direction must not break even when the string changes.

This drill exposes a problem single-string work can hide: pick angle. As the string changes, the pick should "glance across" the string rather than dig into it. Too steep an angle catches the pick on the string and produces a stutter; too flat an angle weakens the tone and loses definition. The ideal angle is where the pick's tip meets the string with a slight tilt, without the hand deviating from its natural position — find it by practicing the drill slowly and listening closely to the pick sound.

The second common problem is a compensating motion that appears as speed increases. When the wrist tires, the body often tries to recruit help from the shoulder or elbow; this can feel like it adds power in the short term, but it breaks the technique, reduces precision, and leads to tension in the forearm over time. The most reliable way to catch this compensation is to record the drill on a mirror or phone camera and watch it back.

🎯 Checkpoint

If the recording shows shoulder or elbow movement, drop the tempo and bring the motion back to the wrist alone. Locking in this discipline before chasing speed prevents bad habits from forming later.

Once the drill is clean at 60 BPM (eighth notes), continue with gradual increases on the metronome. The goal isn't speed alone — it's keeping the same tone quality across every string change; sounding clean on one string and muddy on the next is a sign the drill hasn't settled in yet.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I learn alternate picking or economy picking?
Alternate picking is a fundamental technique valid across all styles and should be learned first. Economy picking is a more advanced variation.
Why does alternate picking get harder at string changes?
Since the pick's angle and distance change, the wrist must adjust to a new target along with the stroke direction at the same time.
How long does it take to speed up alternate picking?
Most guitarists practicing consistently with gradual metronome increase see a noticeable speed increase within a few months.
Should the wrist or fingers move?
Modern technique teaching largely recommends wrist motion; the main source of movement should be the wrist.
