In sweep picking, the pick sweeps across consecutively played strings in one continuous motion (down or up) — rather than striking each string separately, the pick glides across them. The technique is typically used to play three- or four-string arpeggios at very high speed and is a characteristic part of neoclassical/shred guitar style.

In alternate picking, the pick changes direction for every note; in sweep picking, the pick continues in one direction, and the real work happens in the left hand fretting and releasing each note at the right moment. This makes sweep picking technically different from alternate picking — one isn't an advanced version of the other; they're parallel skills.

The most critical element of sweep picking is perfect coordination between the right hand's continuous motion and the left hand's note-by-note fretting/releasing timing. The left hand must lightly mute the current note right before the next one is played (fret-hand muting) — otherwise notes overlap and create a "blurry" sound.

1. Choose a simple three-string minor arpeggio and set the metronome to 50-60 BPM.
2. Play very slowly, hearing each note clean and separate — blurriness means the tempo is too high.
3. Once notes are fully clean, use Auto Increment mode to raise the tempo in +2 BPM steps.
4. Once the three-string arpeggio feels comfortable, move to four- or five-string arpeggios.

• Trying to speed up too early: Sweep picking isn't a technique where speed comes without cleanliness; impatience usually creates a lasting habit of blurriness.
• Forgetting to mute with the left hand: This is the most common cause of notes overlapping.
• Focusing only on the right hand: In sweep picking, the real difficulty is the left hand's timing; the right hand only makes a continuous motion.
